Cathy O’Neil at AltitudeX NYC: Dedicated to the underdog
By Kyle Daniels on March 23, 2022In November 2021, we held the first-ever instalment of our Decision Intelligence event series, AltitudeX.
Taking place in Manchester, AltitudeX exceeded all expectations, as we welcomed over 700 tech, data and AI enthusiasts to the iconic Depot Mayfield to discuss how technology can help all teams reach new heights in business.
In 2022, not only are we planning on another summit in Manchester (bigger and better, of course!), but we’re also thrilled to be bringing AltitudeX to London and New York for the very first time.
Our debut NYC event will offer attendees the chance to enjoy a more intimate AltitudeX experience at Shop Studios in Manhattan. Great themes, great people and great content. Not to mention a great guest speaker…
For the inaugural AltitudeX NYC, we wanted to go big. We’re therefore thrilled to announce that best-selling author, Cathy O’Neil, will be joining us at Shop Studios in Manhattan next month!
Who is Cathy O’Neil?
Best known for her insightful blog, mathbabe.org, and critically acclaimed bestselling book, ‘Weapons of Math Destruction’, Cathy received her PhD in Mathematics from Harvard University.
Having worked in the finance, tech, and academia sector, she launched the Lede Program for data journalism at Columbia University and recently founded ORCAA, an algorithmic auditing company. Cathy is also a regular contributor to Bloomberg View.
A certified best seller
Following the release of her first book, ‘Doing Data Science’, co-written with Rachel Schutt in 2013, Cathy followed it up with the New York Times best seller, ‘Weapons of Math Destruction’, in 2016.
Focusing on the societal impact of algorithms, and the negative impact of big data in the wrong hands, ‘Weapons of Math Destruction’ garnered critical acclaim – winning the Euler Book Prize and being long-listed for the National Book Award for non-fiction.
Cathy’s latest book, ‘The Shame Machine: Who profits in the new age of humiliation’, released in March 2022, focuses on the role shame plays in society and how it can drive social norms.
She has been described as a data skeptic, and regularly speaks on the dangers of unregulated data and its influence on big business. We can’t wait to hear what she has to say at AltitudeX NYC!
